Holistic prenatal care

[dropcap]W[/dropcap]e provide compassionate, loving, woman-centered holistic prenatal care in which both the woman and the midwife are actively engaged in the decision-making process. All decisions are based on informed consent. Every appointment is scheduled for 1 hour. This allows for ample time for your questions to be answered. We encourage you to bring your partner, your children and anyone else who is supporting you through your pregnancy to your appointments. We hope that this time will build a trusting bond between you, your family and your midwives.

Prenatal time will be spent addressing your questions, fears and hopes as your pregnancy progresses. Visits include routine obstetrical care such as checking your vital signs (pulse, blood pressure, weight, urinalysis (peeing in a cup), measuring uterine growth, assessing fetal position, and listening to your baby’s heart rate. .

Prenatals are scheduled once a month until the 32nd week of pregnancy, then every two weeks until the 36th week of pregnancy when we begin meeting weekly until you go into labor. We believe that healthy mamas make healthy babies and nutrition is a cornerstone of our approach. We offer holistic care to address the physical, nutritional and emotional aspects of your pregnancy. This may include herbal supplements, mineral supplements, nutritional counseling or referrals to other practitioners if the need arises.

We also offer all the same prenatal testing, laboratory work and ultrasounds utilized by Obstetricians with respect to your informed choice about each procedure. We have access to several labs and imaging centers in the Reno – Lake Tahoe area to serve you, and can even do many labs in the office for your convenience.  We will provide you with the information, risks and benefits of each test, take the time to answer any questions you may have and then you decide what is best for you, your pregnancy and your baby. If the need arises we can also refer you out for further testing or consult with OBs or other midwives as necessary.

Just as a woman’s heart knows how and when to pump, her lungs to inhale, and her hand to pull back from fire, so she knows when and how to give birth. ~Virginia Di Orio
